Dhaka University suspends Chhatra League activists

The
Dhaka University authorities on Monday suspended for a year four
students, all belonging to the ruling Awami league student wing (BCL),
for beating up five journalists on the campus just because they had
protested against stalking a senior female student.
They beat up the journalists on Sunday for protesting against stalking a senior female student of the university.
The
authorities also issued show cause notices to the suspended activists to
explain by November 24, why they would not be expelled from the
university.
The university administration took the action after the victims lodged complaints with the vice-chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique.
On
Sunday, a group of 20 to 25 BCL activists of Kabi Jasimuddin Hall unit,
loyal to the hall unit secretary Kazi Enayet beat up five reporters of
as many media at the TSC intersection with rods for protesting against
stalking of a senior female student of the department of mass
communication and journalism.
On Monday night, KJabi Jasimuddin Hall unit expelled the four activists from BCL.
Many
students said that such incidents were recurring because the university
administration failed to take action against the offenders in the past.
Earlier,
the university administration took no action against BCL activists of
AF Rahman Hall for beating Qaderuddin Shishir, DU Correspondent of daily
New Nation on November 3.
Campus
sources said that some BCL activists of AF Rahman Hall led by Arif a
third year student of Philosophy loyal to Reza Sikander, vice president
of the organisation’s DU unit, and Angur, joint office secretary of Sir
AF Rahman Hall unit, beat up the New National correspondent when he had
gone to cover an incident in which salesman of a shop at Nilkhet was
abducted and confined to a dormitory room on November 03.
The university authorities are yet to take any action against the BCL activists for the two offences.
The proctor said that action would be taken against the offenders and soon.
